Throwback Trip: Pebble Beach 2014 – Hotel Planning (at Pebble Beach)

The Inn at Spanish Bay

Pebble Beach is a big place. It’s made up of several resorts that are privately owned by a trust. In addition to the headline Pebble Beach golf course there are three other courses, including the famed Spyglass Hill course.

In order to secure a tee time for any of those courses more than 24 hours ahead of time you need to stay at one of the Pebble Beach resorts. Staying at the resort usually requires a minimum 2 night stay with a limitation of 2 golfers per room. There would not be the option of the four of us cramming into the same room to save money.

The resorts are NOT part of any points or loyalty program so this was going to be an expense for which we would be paying full price. This part of the trip was going to be the largest expense by far. Booking even the lowest rates at the least expensive resort was going to be $700 per night per room.

Since we were traveling across the country to specifically play these courses we were committed to staying at one of the Pebble Beach resorts so the first order of business was to nail down those dates and tee times and plan the rest of the trip around that.

We had nailed down a 2 week time period where everyone was available the first two weeks of November. During a snowy January weekend more than 10 months before the trip I got inspired to call Pebble Beach to nail down dates and get a better idea of the costs. At the time you couldn’t really check out prices and availability online so calling was the only option.

It was a surprise to me that some weeks/times were already filled! In hindsight it shouldn’t have been a surprise but I was new at this planning thing!

The agent I talked to was very helpful and told be about various options we had. The two night golf packages they were offering included two rounds of golf and allowed adding a third round for an additional fee on the third day. This would allow us to play on the day of arrival as well as the day of departure. This would surely help us fulfill our Pebble Beach golf fix!

Booking

After trying a few different dates with the reservation specialist, I was able to find two rooms for two nights at The Inn at Spanish Bay. Each room had two queen beds and we requested neighboring rooms. This is the same resort I stayed at with my father 10 years earlier so we knew it was an fantastic 5 star property. It’s also the “least expensive” of the reports at Pebble Beach but was still far from affordable at $750+ per night per room.

I kept having to remind myself this was a bucket list trip. From our experience during the first trip I knew it was going o be worth it, but it was still a big number to process and come to terms with!

I was also able to book tee times at Pebble Beach on our day of arrival. On the full day we were there we snagged a tee time at Spyglass Hill. And on the morning of our departure we got an early tee time at The Links at Spanish Bay, the course at the hotel we were staying at. Not only are the hotels expensive, but the golf is expensive as well. Each round cost between $300 and $450 per person depending on the course. That is a huge amount of money for a round of golf though I don’t think any of us have even the slightest regret about it. The experience was truly unique.

The most important part of the trip was nailed down. Now to figure out the rest of the trip!
