Throwback Trip: Pebble Beach 2014 – Car Rental Planning

Nothing says guys golfing trip quite like a minivan, right? RIGHT!

We were going to spend a fair amount of time in the car during the trip. We would also have a lot of stuff including our luggage, our golf bags and the golf bag travel cases.

We were definitely looking to save money here. Minivans are normally fairly pricey and it isn’t uncommon for them to be more than twice the cost of a smaller car. Getting two smaller cars was an option, but was less desirable as it would take away from a lot of the togetherness of the trip.

Searching

During the time of this trip, I was flying United for work and had accumulated a few thousand miles in their program. After a little research on the United website, I found there were several ways to redeem those points for things other than flights, including car rentals.

After doing some comparison shopping, I found a week long minivan rental for our dates for about 20,000 united miles. The cash price was over $700 which is an excellent redemption value for those points.

Booking

Based on what I found on the United website, I booked the car rental using the miles. The rental was for a minivan rental through Dollar Rent a Car. I had searched everywhere for lower rates for cash prices but was unable to find anything. Given the best price at the time was $700, using these miles made a lot of sense as it was an excellent redemption value and saved us a lot of real money.
