Throwback Trip: Pebble Beach 2014 Diary – Day 2

Presidio Golf Course, San Francisco

There were no complaints when the alarm went off. The three hour time difference didn’t hurt, but today this was the first day of golf and we were all excited to get the trip started. We went down for breakfast in the hotel, which was ordinary but adequate and then headed north to San Franciso for our first round.

The Presidio Golf Course

The drive north was uneventful. It took about 40 minutes and there was no traffic since it was early on a Sunday morning. If it was a weekday that trip could have taken at least twice that so we scheduled this day correctly!

Driving up to the course was a bit surreal. The sun was just coming up and it was a little foggy. The GPS said we were very close to the course but it certainly didn’t feel like we were in the right place. Then we made our last turn and we suddenly went from the city to a golf course. It was like magic!

We quickly got prepared and checked in with plenty of time before our tee time. We spend a few minutes warming up on the practice green and hoping that the fog would start to lift. We could see the sun trying to break through, but the fog was still pretty thick by our tee time.

For the first 4 holes the group in front of us was mostly lost in the fog to us. We could barely see them or the trees lining the fairway. That of course would not intimidate hackers like us!

Foggy start to our round at Presidio Golf Course

After the first few holes the fog lifted and the full beauty of the course came into view. It never felt like we were in the city. The course had some really challenging holes and was in fantastic condition.

This course ended up being one of my favorites on the trip (behind Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill) though that might be somewhat related to how I played. This was by far my best round of the trip.

The Rest of the Day

After golf, we grabbed some lunch nearby at Mels Drive-In, a California chain of diners and filled up on some excellent comfort food. We ended up heading back to the hotel with a slight detour to drive by some highlights in the city.

Back at the hotel we relaxed for the rest of the day. We got some pizza’s for dinner, watched some sports on TV and packed up to prep for an early start the next morning.

The next day we would be checking out and then playing at Half Moon Bay before heading driving south to Monterey.
