May 2019 Quick Trip: Great Wolf Lodge – Summary

When the day arrived our youngest was up super early, dressed in his soccer uniform and ready to get the day started! After his morning soccer game, he came home to shower and get ready to head off to the water park to check in right at 1:00pm when we could get in.

Arrival

Tomatico and I went to his early afternoon game separately and headed out directly after it finished (his team won!). It was a short 45 minute drive and when we arrived we found parking spaces were sparse. We got lucky (eventually) and found one not too far from the entrance. My wife didn’t get so lucky and had parked a bit farther away.

We went inside to meet up with them. Our youngest had been riding the slides for several hours by the time we arrived. My wife had just gotten a text indicating our room was available so she went to drop our stuff there. Since our wrist bands worked as our key she didn’t need to go back to the front desk and deal with those lines in order to get into the room.

Afternoon Fun

Tomatico and I went up to the room when my wife got back. We got changed into our swimsuits and stopped by the arcade for a few minutes before heading to the pool. We caught up with our youngest and the three of us went on a few of the raft slides before moving over to the other pool area. My wife happily read a book and guarded our stuff while we did our thing.

The kids played in several of the pools before grabbing me to go on some of the tube slides in this area. The lines were manageable and we went several times. It was a workout lugging the tubes up all the stairs but the ride down was a lot of fun!

Dinner Off Site

After a few hours the kids were getting tired and hungry. Spending all that energy climbing the stairs really worked up an appetite. Instead of eating on-site, we decided to go to a nearby restaurant we had been to before called the 1761 Old Mill.

It’s an old mill building from… you guessed it, 1761 that is now a restaurant. There’s a river that runs around and underneath the building and there are ducks walking all around. It’s a pretty neat location and the food is pretty good as well.

Back at the hotel it was time for bed as Tomatico had an early wake up call to get to his game.

Sunday at the Water Park

With an early alarm, Tomatico and I headed off to his soccer games, trying not to disturb the rest of the family. While we were at his games they ate breakfast at the resort, checked out of the room and made their way to the water park. My youngest was determined to ride as many slides and maximize his time in the water park.

Around noon we returned from the soccer games and used the locker rooms to get changed into our swim gear. The three of us used the wave pool and went down the various slides countless times. We spent some time in the (not so) lazy river and in the pool with the water basketball hoops. Tomatico spent a lot of time trying to make it over the floating lily pads from one end of the pool to the other without falling off. I’m not sure he ever succeeded but I was proud that he kept trying!

By mid afternoon we were all pretty tired and decided to call it a day. We used the locker rooms to get changed and headed home after a great weekend.

Summary

While the nightly rate was higher than we would have liked, we still got two days in the water park out of it and a very enjoyable weekend threaded between several soccer games. We consider that a huge success!

They do a great job with the theming and making sure there are plenty of things to do. The rooms are very family friendly and well maintained. The environment is very family friendly and ultimate a decent to amazing value, even when the room rates are high.

There are lifeguards at the pool and they are VERY vigilant about safety. They are always walking back and for and watching everyone, not sitting in a chair looking at their phone, so you can feel confident people are safe. At the same time they don’t act as the “no fun police” so there is a sensible balance.

Our youngest had an amazing weekend and was super happy with his present. For us it was a lot easier to plan than a real birthday party so it all worked out for us. This is a resort that we go to a couple times a year and it is always fun. We got there specifically BECAUSE it is so much fun.
