April 2019: Los Cabos Diary – Day 2

We managed to sleep in later than expected. We went to the breakfast buffet located downstairs at the Tomato’s restaurant we ate dinner at the previous night. There was an excellent spread with lots of traditional Mexican and American options. There were event complementary mimosa and bloody mary drinks on offer. They had several fresh juice options as well. The bread and pastries were homemade and excellent. The only thing I thought was missing was bacon. They had scrambled eggs, sausages, fresh fruit, and all the other traditional American options, including an omelet bar, but no strips of bacon. Tomatico found the workaround as there was diced bacon bits at the omelet station. Tomatico even found a panini press. Very exciting!

When we were done, we showed the waiter our breakfast vouchers and they adjusted out check to remove the adult breakfasts and gave the kids meals a 15% discount due to my wife’s status. They even gave us a personalized table decoration with her name written on it.

Active Morning

We got our fill at breakfast and headed to the beach to play soccer. There were goals already set up on a flat part of the beach the kids had seen from our room. As we found out, running on sand is super hard and they got tired after just a few minutes, retreating to some nearby chairs in the shade.

My wife caught up with us there and we soon headed to one of the sports-based pools. This one had a basketball hoop and some water polo type goals. The water was pretty cold and it took awhile for the kids to get in. A lady that was already in the pool said the water was usually much warmer than it was that day. I’m not sure why it was so cold but all the pools were pretty cool during our entire stay.

Our friends texted that they were at the kids pool so we headed up to join them there. The boys had a ton of fun playing with their two girls and their baby brother. There was a climbing structure and a bridge as well as a slide. The pool itself had one end that was zero entry. It was great seeing both family play together!

The pool got more crowded as the morning progressed but was never overwhelming. There was a bar at the pool and the waiters were very friendly and helpful whenever we wanted refreshments.

Around 11pm my wife and Tomatico wanted to go do a complementary cooking class offered near the sports pools closer to the beach so they left us playing in the kids pool. When they got there they found it was pretty crowded and the food they were making wasn’t all that interesting (guacamole). They soon came back to join us at the kids pool.

Around lunch time we met our friends at a bar/restaurant down on the beach. It was next to the soccer goals and a beach volleyball court where we had started off the morning. It was a relaxing lunch and the boys were quite entertained watching the people playing volleyball.

Windy Afternoon

After lunch we walked along the beach for a little bit. I tried playing Frisbee with the boys but it was very windy and not a lot of fun. We ended up down near the surf watching the waves come in.

The black flag was out which meant that it was not safe to swim. We of course saw some oblivious people go into the water anyways. The lifeguards on duty were quick to run over and to tell them to get out of the water before they got into too much trouble. The surf is VERY dangerous between the size of the waves, the undertow and the rocks just offshore. The signs and flags make it clear and they tell you on checkin, but some people are either overconfident or oblivious.

Luckily we didn’t see anyone in serious danger this time.

The Marina

After a short rest in the room we drove into the marina in Cabo San Lucas. It was an easy 15 minute drive and we found a paid parking lot right next to the marina. Surrounding the marina there are dozens of restaurants and people everywhere. It was a very active area and we walked around taking everything in.

Lots of people were offering/asking about boat rides to see Los Archo (the arch) or going on fishing expeditions or scuba trips. The hotel concierge was offering a short sightseeing trip for $45 per person that included seeing the arch so we had that as a reference point.

Some of the vendors at the marina were more aggressive but one that approached us was less so and we rewarded him engaging with him. He only wanted $10 a person and showed us the boat. We thought about it and later made arrangements with him for the next morning at 9am. We would payed half up front and would pay the rest when we got there. It would be a shared tour (also called a water taxi) that would take us from the marina show us the rock formations at lands end, including the arch, lovers beach, divorce beach and many other places. It would then drop us off at a beach adjacent to the marina. We could spend as much time at the beach as we wanted and walk back to the marina to our car. Sounded like a good deal to us!

It was getting close to dinner time and we found a place with something the kids would like. It was awesome seeing the boys order in Spanish, though they had to read the English menus because they can’t read Spanish yet. The staff is always shocked when Tomatico responds in Spanish. They don’t see many Spanish speaking kids that look like him 🙂

Evening Workout

After dinner we headed back to the hotel. My wife and our youngest went for a walk on the beach towards some rocks at the edge of the property. Climbing on rocks is always a great adventure! Tomatico and I instead headed to the gym for a workout.

The gym was well equipped but empty as it was close to 8pm. It was only open from 7am until 9pm which seemed like fairly limited hours for a gym, but it worked for us. Signs in the gym said people had to be 16 in order to use it, but when we checked in, nobody said anything about Tomatico. Maybe he looks a lot older than he is…

All the equipment was fairly new and in excellent condition. There was a cardio area with bikes, treadmills and elyptical machines. There was a large area with weight machines and benches. There was even a yoga studio area with mats, resistance bands, smaller dumbbells, resistance bands, medicine balls and any other equipment you’d need to work out with. There were even foam rollers!

After our workout on our way back to the room, we saw a singer performing in the courtyard outside the main lobby. During most nights they transform the courtyard into a marketplace with a themed dinner event. This night it was a Mexican theme and they had a live singer. Our room was in the main building and on our floor the was a balcony we could go out onto to get a birds-eye view of the performance center stage. It was awesome!

Back in the room we found my wife and youngest had seen an amazing sunset from where they were by the rocks at the edge of the property. We’d have to check it out before we leave!

After a quick shower I met up with my friend in the lobby. We found a quiet place near the pool overlooking the ocean to catch up a little bit. It had been years since we had last seen him and this vacation was a great opportunity to see what we’d missed in each other’s lives. It was a peaceful and relaxing backdrop, for sure.
