Fort Myers 2020: Diary – Day 2

We slept in until about 7:30 before heading to the club lounge for breakfast. The boys are quite used to that kind of breakfast so it was no big deal. The breakfast options were the normal bacon, eggs, sausage, yogurt, etc and was above average in quality. We had to eat quickly because we had school work.

Remote School

While remote school has become more routine, this was one of their first experiences with it. Since my wife and I also had to work, we split up. Tomatico stayed with her in the room while our youngest went with me to find a quiet place in the lobby. At this point, remote school consisted of doing some printed worksheets they had sent home and it wasn’t online zoom classes.

We had told the boys that they had to work until at least noon or all their required assignments were complete, whichever came last. We needed to keep them focused and motivated on their work, especially with no Zoom checking. Once they were done with their work they could go to the pool. Unsurprisingly, they got their work done in record time!

I had my share of meetings and work to get done, but I was used to working remotely. Many of my co-workers in California, though were just starting their work from home experience so there was a little bit of time for them to get used to it. Luckily my team was quite used to working remotely and transitioned smoothly.

Afternoon Pool

We ended up getting lunch at the pool restaurant called Corkscrews. After eating, my wife and I switched off between calls sitting by the pool doing work. Luckily there was good wifi there! We had to take some calls in the room to minimize background noise and distractions, of course. The boys had an amazing time in the pools and on the slides. They also played a lot of ping pong and corn hole. It was the best “recess” we could have hoped for.

For dinner we decided to take a Lyft to a different mall complex. It was about 15 minutes away and there were quite a few restaurants in the mall. My youngest and I went to eat at Fords Garage which apparently is a chain. It was a burger joint and my youngest had a 1/2 pound burger. He somehow inhaled it all and even stole some of my dinner. His time it the pool have him an appetite.

Tomatico and my wife checked out a Mexican place but it was closed and ended up at an Italian place next to where we ate. My youngest and I even got some gelato while we waited for them to finish, though the gelato was sadly not very good.

Back at the hotel we went to the Club Lounge again for some more dessert before dinner. The boys were tired from their pool time and we watched some TV before calling it a night. We were really enjoying our time in the warm weather!
