In July of 2020 while we were in Maine, I was talking to my neighbor (the husband of my cousin) about Vail. He is an avid skier and spends a lot of the winter in Vail. We compared the dates of the winter vacation of his kids and that of our kids and they lined up. We decided to plan a ski trip to Vail! His girls could show my boys what real big mountain skiing is like. We made our reservations booking the Vail Marriott resort on points to start the planning.
We had even been able to book our flights into Vail instead of Denver using United miles left over from our canceled trip to Hawaii in the summer of 2020 and thought we were all set… until I realized too late in December that I had forgotten to book our ski passes. In order to ski at Vail resorts during the 2021 season, you needed a ski pass and I had missed the deadline by a day. DOH!
Those plans were out the window. Luckily I was able to cancel everything without penalty since we knew COVID was going to introduce a fair amount of uncertainty into any of our plans anyways.
So where else do we go?
If we couldn’t go skiing, we decided to look for someplace warm. We had to stay in the country because of the risk of quarantine rules changing on us both from the US and the boys’ school. We decided on Miami. It was somewhat of a reluctant choice for me because it was Florida for the third consecutive trip, but it was warm and easy to get to with a nonstop flight.
Now we had to find flights and a place to stay.
