Throwback Trip: Pebble Beach 2014 Diary – Day 6

Spyglass Hill Golf Course

Nothing was going to top the previous day at Pebble Beach, though a round at Spyglass Hill is special and amazing in its own right. We got up early as usual after a relaxing and restful night. After staying in more affordable places earlier in the trip, experiencing a top-notch luxury hotel for a couple nights was a noticeable upgrade.

We drove a few short miles to Spyglass Hill and paid our $385/person greens fees in the pro shop before heading to the Spyglass Hill Grill next door to grab something quick for breakfast. We then headed to the driving range to each hit a bucket of balls to get warmed up. While there had been a light rain in the morning, by the time we started hitting balls the weather was just cloudy.

Spyglass Hill

Pebble Beach gets all the glory as the signature courses, and for good reason. The views are breathtaking in nearly every direction and the course itself is a masterpiece. Spyglass Hill isn’t far behind in my heart, though. The course is tricky and tight and difficult. The views are different, but still unique and amazing in their own way.

We did not have a caddie this round as we did at Pebble Beach though we could have used one to help read the greens which continued to trick us. There are some really unique holes on this course and it’s no wonder it’s considered such a challenging place to play.

Wildlife at Spyglass Hill Golf Course

The front nine is closer to the ocean and winds through some dunes. The back nine is in the woods and we saw quite a few deer and other wildlife wandering around the fairways. Every hole was in amazing condition as you would expect for a course of this caliber.

After Golf

Once we finished our round we headed into Monterey again to grab some lunch before going back to the hotel to rest up. My cousin was somehow still full of energy and took the complementary shuttle back to the golf training center a Pebble Beach again to hit some more balls and work on his game. As resort guest we had unlimited access to the training center during our stay.

For dinner we ate at the hotel sports bar which overlooked the course we would play the next day, the Links at Spanish Bay. The windows were oversized with amazing ocean views in the background.

We gave my cousins a hard time as he claimed to have “found” his game at the practice center that afternoon. We’d put that to the test the following morning.
