My wife woke up early again for work. When I eventually woke up I realized I had developed a bit of a cold. I was congested with a sore throat and a little bit of a cough. A hot shower helped a little for a few minutes, but the telltale body aches and general miserableness returned.
Morning Recovery
We met my wife for breakfast and I ate a little, but I was definitely under the weather in general. My wife decided to take the kids to the beach and pool and work from there while I rested up. Luckily the WiFi reached the beach. I stayed in the room and tried to rest using the medicine I had with us, including what was left of some kids’ cough medicine.
My wife ended up renting an umbrella on the beach as the sun was getting pretty intense. She could only rent it for the whole day so we had it until 5 pm. The boys played in the ocean and used their inflatable rings we had gotten them at the hotel on the Big Island. They were even motivated enough to blow them up themselves! Tomatico, of COURSE, managed to lose one of his water shoes that we have gotten just before the trip. We even got nice ones for him. Oh well.
Once they got tired of the ocean they moved to the pool for another hour. By that time I was a bit more rested (or the medicine had kicked in) and I was ready for some lunch. The kids were starved as well and my wife had finished up her work for the day.
Lunch in Kapalua
After getting changed, we headed north to the town of Kapalua. We had stayed at the Ritz Carlton there in our previous stay. While we didn’t have a great stay at that hotel, we did enjoy the general store located right next to the resort. The store had a deli in the back that also had an excellent selection of hot food made to order for remarkably reasonable prices. The food was cheap and overall was pretty good with some local specialties my wife really enjoyed.
It was a short 15-minute drive from our resort. At the store, there was only a short line to order. Once we ordered we had to pay at the front while they prepared it (which could take 10-15 minutes depending on what you ordered and how busy things were). This is a place where a lot of locals go so you know it has to be good! (Right?). In addition to the food, I picked up some cold medicine to help with the symptoms I was still dealing with. Prices on medicine was sky high, though. Some of the name brand cold medicine was close to $30 for 24 pills. I went with the store brand… which I was surprised they even had.
Our food took about 15 minutes to be ready and we ate outside. The store has picnic tables on their porch. The food was excellent, just as we had remembered.
Lazy Afternoon
While I was feeling better I was still beat after our outing for lunch so we headed back to the hotel. The boys had gotten a lot of sun, especially Tomatico, so we decided to keep them inside for the afternoon. I rested while they watched TV. My wife was not one to let the beach umbrella go to waste so she went out to alternate between doing work and swimming in the ocean.
Dinner and the Mall
Once my wife returned from the beach it was getting towards dinner time. Tomatico helped join in the search and found Round Table Pizza nearby. Round Table Pizza is a chain that I frequent when I travel for work to California. Pizza sounded good to everyone so we decided to head there for dinner.
It was hot outside but it was even hotter inside the store. The tables were full so we had to eat outside anyways. We all enjoyed the pizza. It was their first time at the chain and they really liked it a lot.
Back at the hotel, we decided to walk down the beach (actually the trail along the beach) to the Whalers Village. It’s an outdoor mall with several restaurants and lots of shopping. We checked out the menus at a few places to see if they would make our list for future meals, but they looked expensive and not all that appealing.
Further into the mall away from the ocean, they were playing a movie in the common area. It was one of the Madagascar movies and the kids sat down to watch it immediately. One of the stores had a popcorn machine and was giving away free popcorn. Apparently, they play a different movie every night and it appeared to be quite popular.
My wife did some shopping while I watched the kids (and the movie). It started to sprinkle so we grabbed the kids and headed back to the hotel. It was a short 10-minute walk through halfway there it started to rain pretty hard. We managed to make it back without getting too soaked. Plus, when it rains, it’s still 90 degrees out so you don’t get cold.
With that, we got the kids to bed and went to sleep. I’d be taking the kids to do a little hike in the morning since I was feeling better.
